Project description

architectural leadership of the transformation of an existing production environment from vSphere 8 / VCF 5.x generation to VCF 9.1.1 (brownfield)
migration of several hundred ESXi hosts, 9 vCenters, multiple sites, DRS, and multiple workload domains separated by network and function (Linux, Windows, SAP servers...)
analysis of the current state, design of the target architecture, and assessment of the impact of VCF 9.x architectural changes on existing infrastructure and applications
design of the transformation strategy, assessment of compatibility and dependencies, planning of update order, migration, rollback, and final validation
creation and ownership of architectural and implementation documentation: HLD/LLD, current and target architecture, implementation and rollback procedures, risk assessment and measures, validation criteria, checklists, and final reports
technical leadership, planning, and coordination of teams across infrastructure domains, supervision of architecture compliance, risk and dependency management, and communication with the client
collaboration possible in an almost 100% remote mode (willingness to travel occasionally within Europe, approx. 1x every 1-2 months with reimbursement of travel expenses)

Project requirements

minimum 8 years of experience with VMware architecture, including technical leadership of complex enterprise environments
experience in the role of Lead Architect for at least one successfully completed large-scale brownfield transformation from vSphere 8 / VCF 5.x generation to VCF 9.x in a multi-site production environment
experience with:
- vSphere/ESXi, vCenter, VCF and its lifecycle management
- infrastructure and application dependencies, compatibility, update order, migration procedures, rollback, and final validation
- NSX and network dependencies
- enterprise environment of 500+ ESXi hosts
- DRS
- cluster design
- workload domains
- Fibre Channel SAN, NetApp NFS and vSAN
knowledge of VCF 9.x architectural changes and their impact on the design and implementation of the transformation
English language at a communicative level (spoken and written)
ability to coordinate technical teams across domains, enforce architectural standards, and manage technical risks and communication with stakeholders
